This weekend the English Football League begins and Will Burns provides his antepost selections for League Two.
Beaten in the playoff finals back in May, Plymouth Argyle are looking to bounce back with an automatic promotion spot this year. Manager Derek Adams has spent wisely and recruited well-travelled Scottish striker David Goodwillie to lead the attack, who has notched 10 goals in pre-season. On top of that, Football League experience Ryan Donaldson and Jordan Slew have come in with the majority of last year’s squad still intact. The bookies do not fancy them and have them at 16/1 (Coral) to win the league but I see that a far too tempting price to resist. Goals from Goodwillie, Jake Jervis and Graham Carey should see Argyle up there or thereabouts and it is worth going small on the overpriced 16/1.
TIP: Plymouth to win EFL League Two (1PT placed on 17.00 at Coral)
Carlisle proved to be one of the most entertaining sides in the full 92 last season, scoring and conceding for fun. This year I see no different under Keith Curle but with some great additions to the squad, they have a great chance of clinching a promotion place if not the title themselves. Up front, Jabo Ibehre, scorer of 17 goals last season, will welcome new signings Jamie Devitt and Nicky Adams with open arms after the pair were two of the top three in the League Two assists charts. He will joined in attack by former Middlesbrough youth player Charlie Wyke and Shaun Miller, who notched 15 in 32 in a struggling Morecambe side last campaign. They are valued at 18/1 to the win the league but a decent 11/2 to gain promotion with I see as a safer bet.
TIP: Carlisle United to be promoted (2PTS placed on 5.50 at PaddyPower)
Under the leadership of Warren Feeney, Newport County are my pick to drop out of the Football League. After a poor start to last season with Terry Butcher at the helm, then a resurgence under John Sheridan, the Welsh side only managed to collect two points from their last ten games with Feeney in the hot-seat and one has to wonder if the season lasted a few more weeks, they may already be down. Scoring goals was a major problem for County last year, bagging only 43 goals in the 46 outings and after losing top scorer Scott Boden (15) in the summer, this could prove to be an issue again. Priced at 9/2 for the drop with BetVictor is worth a punt.
TIP: Newport County to be relegated (2PTS placed on 4.50 at BetVictor)
If he can stay fit, David Goodwillie should be a major contender for the Golden Boot at this level, after all only two seasons ago he was playing Championship football with Blackburn. He’s valued at a huge 33/1 with Bet365 and playing in a title contending Plymouth Argyle side, he’s worth a small each-way stake. He is in tremendous form, as mentioned earlier, bagging ten goals in pre-season.
TIP: David Goodwillie to be League One Top Goalscorer (1PT Each-way placed on 34.00 at Bet365)
