EURO 2016: Romania v Switzerland Preview & Betting Tips

Group A continues tomorrow as Romania meet Switzerland and Jake Jackman predicts that it will be a close one.

160614 - Florian Andone

This is one of the group games I was most excited about, as I believe Romania and Switzerland to be of a similar level, and it might bring out the more attacking tendencies in the former’s squad. Switzerland are very overrated, and showed themselves to be just that in their opening group game. They were far from convincing, despite the three points, and the Romanians will fancy their chances, especially after a very positive showing against the hosts. This match should prove to be decisive in who takes second place, as Romania would hope to beat Albania.

Switzerland have a good squad, and in Granit Xhaka, Breel Embolo and Xherdan Shaqiri, they have some genuinely exciting talents. However, they aren’t the best in front of goal, as they showed against Albania, with Haris Seferovic missing a host of chances in the opening game. He doesn’t look like a centre forward who will score a lot of goals and too much pressure will be put on Shaqiri to win the team matches. The Stoke winger is a match-winner, but he is inconsistent and doesn’t have the ability to carry this side. He needs help and that could come from Embolo, who looked good in his cameo performance on Saturday. He could be given a start in this match.

Romania shocked a lot of people on Friday as they so nearly took a point of the hosts and it would have been deserved. The two players I thought would do well, Nicolae Stanciu and Florin Andone, could be huge in this match, as Romania will get more of the ball in the final third. Stanciu showed flashes of his ability against France, with his quick feet winning the penalty for the equaliser. I expect him to grow in these last two matches, and he could be one of the breakout players of the tournament.

A smart bet for this one would be Under 2.5 Goals (57/100 at Unibet). Neither side scores a lot of goals, and they will know that this result could be crucial in determining which sides qualify from the group. I expect a very tight match, in which a single goal could be decisive. Switzerland have the better attacking players, but they don’t have a proven goalscorer and that showed against Albania. Whereas Romania have Andone, who scored lots in the Spanish second tier and has the potential to play at a much higher level. He will be keen to show that over the remaining two matches.

I think a draw could offer value for money here (11/5 at Bet365). As I said, neither have a lot of goals in their side, which could prove to be the sticking point. Romania looked to have an accomplished back four against France, while the Switzerland back four is similarly strong. It won’t be a great watch for the neutrals.

TIP: Draw (3.20 at Bet365)

TIP: Under 2.5 Goals (1.57 at Unibet)
